Beautiful Conjunction: Comet Garradd Meets M92 Sat, 04 Feb 2012 16:46:45 +0000
This lovely image of Comet Garradd (C/2009 PI) as it passes by the globular cluster M92 in the constellation Hercules, was taken remotely from the Tzek Maun Observatory in New Mexico by our friends Giovanni Sostero, Ernest Guido and Nick Howes. While the two objects look like they are right next to each other, M92 [...]

Do you live here? Tens of millions of Earthlings live and work in the bustling and seemingly intertwined American mega-metropolis of the Philadelphia-New York City-Boston corridor (bottom-center splotch) captured in this stunning “Cities at Night” panorama of the East Coast of the United States along the Atlantic seaboard (image above). Look northward and you’ll see [...]

This is a cool APOD cross section of the Milky Way. It has links to all the objects below the image. Mouse over to lose the anotations.

And a link to the main page that changes every day. APOD

Cool APOD pic today entitled A Laser Strike at the Galactic Center

Click here to view and click the pic on that page for highest res.

BTW the laser is for adaptive/corrective optics. One is software and one is distorting the mirrors, can never remember which way round.

Found this cool APOD pic of a few days ago called Arp 188 and the Tadpole's Tidal Tail

Nice to see gravity in action. There's a smaller galaxy (lower right) that has a jet from its center. Cool.

They are all good, but the first one “A Dark Dune Field in Proctor Crater on Mars” is the oddest.

Didn’t have a clue what it was until I read about it.

No fakes here GT40. Real life is far better than fiction if you look hard enough.

The latest selection from APOD.

The Seagull Nebula. Had to put this in as it's the nickname of our local football team.
A Sun Halo Beyond Stockholm.
The Antikythera Mechanism.
This is a cool mechanism that was made by the Greeks and way ahead of it's time.
And now it is rebuilt with lego...

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLPVCJjTNgk" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLPVCJjTNgk</a>

I read an article of this lego version and the guy who built it had to design his own differential gears to get the right ratios, then send plans to lego to get them to make them.
