Comfort the Disturbed! Disturb the Comfortable!

I'm tempted to work it out right here, and I will, of someone is willing to encourage me. Not the name, of course. I have no clue what that would be, beyond something involving Fibonacci. But the rest I could do. Smiley

I did get a bit lost with the Pythagoras and quadratic bits but Spoiler -> hit a folding realisation and it was much easier.:

Still a little baffled on how to get from Spoiler -> 6-4?2 to 1-(?2-1):

When I type ? in the reply window it shows the square root symbol but it turns to a ? when I post.

Any reason? It is a standard Unicode symbol but not ASCII.

Here's a puzzle that was posted in AiDreams. I actually managed to work it out. See if anyone can. Hint: It's not your usual logic problem.

The prison warden tells his three best behaved prisoners that in the
morning he will give them all one chance to get out of jail free.

When they wake up, they are to dress quickly and all go to a specific
room. At no time are they allowed to communicate with each other in any
way. They will each have a red dot or a white dot on their foreheads.

Anyone who can see a red dot on another's forehead is to tap on the
floor. Anyone who can guess the colour of the dot on his own forehead
correctly will go free, but if he gets it wrong, he will never be released.

In the morning they do as they have been told. All three prisoners tap
on the floor. After a couple of minutes, one of them tells the warden
the colour of the dot on his forehead and he is allowed to go free.

What colour was the dot on his forehead, and how did he know?

I've been trying to work out the above puzzle but with no luck, I keep coming back to there are either 2 or 3 red dots, can't get it any closer than that, how one guy knew what colour he had I'm baffled, I admit.

It's rather simple, really (that is, if I'm right - otherwise I'm an idiot, and it's a tough one).
there were two red dots and one white dot placed on the prisoners' foreheads. The prisoner that had the white dot lied, and also tapped on the floor, then waited until convinced that they got away with the lie, and told the warden that they had the white dot.

[edit]Not sure why my mind went the way it did. The logic was sound when I thought it out, but the description went all wrong here.[/edit]

My guess is there are 3 prisoners, all 3 prisoners can see red dots so they all tap,  the lucky prisoner can see dots on the other 2 prisoners heads so he must be the one with the white dot.

At first I thought the same thing but then I thought, what if all dots are red and none are white, the puzzle only says.

They will each have a red dot or a white dot on their foreheads

" They will each have a red dot or a white dot on their foreheads "
"  Anyone who can guess the colour of the dot on his own forehead

It looks like the other 2 prisoners could have said I have a red dot and they should be released.  If the person with the white dot was not released they could say they had been tricked.  Lots left open in this puzzle.

Assuming no one lied, if all have red dots, each would see 2 red dots and all would tap on the floor.
If 2 were red and 1 white, 2 people would see 1 red dot and 1 would see 2 red dots and all would tap on the floor.
If 1 was red and 2 white, 1 person would see 2 white and not tap on the floor.

If you see red and white and the red person taps, yours must be red.

No cigars just yet - let me know when you all want to be put out of your misery  Cheesy

When I was trying to solve it, the chap hinted that it's as much about what you don't know as what you do...
