That was one of the nice things about Norton, it would run in the background during idle time.  It checked all the downloads right after they downloaded.  Lots of good points about it.

I never do a full scan, I used to but it never found anything.

I have seen MSE catch files on the fly on multiple computers, if something is downloaded or a new file is copied onto the PC MSE will automatically scan it or spot a nasty.

MSE works particularly well with IE 9 too automatically scanning its temp and downloaded files.

So for me now, just install MSE and forget about viruses, maybe do a quick scan from time to time but it never finds anything.

I know I'm a (poor) guy from the past. My computer is old (Pentium IV). My OS is old (XP). My browser is old (IE8).

And I myself don't feel totally brand new.

That's why I hesitate to change my avast! Everyday/night, it meets some strange things on my favorite "sensible" sites (it seems lots of Russian sites contain many dangerous things). And avast! always tells me that an attack failed and the "thing" was caught on the fly.

Sometimes (yes... sometimes), I ask Spybot - Search & Destroy "what's up Doctor?", and it usually finds quite nothing. (Ad-Aware doesn't want to work on this computer). So I wonder if avast! is an antispyware too. As you guess, I think avast! is very good.

I have read lots of articles on the net. It seems ALL the free antiviruses are the best!! It depends of the used criteria. Like cellphones providers in France...

BTW I wonder, saying that a software made by Microsoft is good, is it really politically correct...?  Grin

Ah thank you GT. Sorry, dunno the difference between a good virus and a bad spyware.

Just that both are very very bad malwares.  Embarrassed

I've only just realised Avast is a piece of software.

I thought it was a French exclamation and you were being silly.

As to whether it's PC to say M$ software is good; I say it's free and works well. I like free.

LOL Snowcrash, avast! (the "!" is the most important part of the program) is free and I like it.

By the way, I think you're right: I'm silly.  joker
