Hot News

It looks like M$ might have seen the light and are going to release a new version of Win 8 that brings back the start menu and also allows the user to boot straight to desktop.

So only a half hearted nod to the desktop user then.

They're not going to make 2 O/S, one for desktops, one for tablets and optimise both.

That's right Snowy and them Apps will still be in there along with their annoying slow and unworkable interface (on the desktop PC).

Here is a true story:

I got called out to customer who had a new laptop with Win 8 on it, they had the laptop for a month but couldn't use it, I spent an hour and a half doing my best to return the thing to as close to Win 7 as I could, now she can at least use the thing.

Being able to boot to desktop and having the Start button back would have made my job much easier.

Windows Blue was the code name for windows 8.1 development stage, I think the final release will be called Windows 8.1.

Look at it this way, will M$ completely ditch Windows 8 this soon after it's release? very unlikely so they will end up calling it Win 8.1  thumbsup

Ah, that makes sense I suppose I quite like the name windows blue for some reason though  scratch-head

I said before I quite like win8 on the missus laptop, but i suppose it's all down to how you use your machine etc.  Wink

What I ended up doing was buying a few 3rd party apps that returned to me my Windows 7 look & feel. all of the apps come from Stardock, were reasonably priced, and let me use my computer in a way that I prefer. these apps are:

1.) Start8
2.) Decor8
3.) ModernMix

In addition to those apps from Stardock, I also use Fences and ObjectDock, but I used those back when I had Windows 7. Smiley

ModernMix looks very interesting. hmmmm maybe a future purchase will be in store Smiley

windows 8.1 I most likely will not be getting for I really love windows 8, granted it took some time to get use to but like all operating systems, there is a learning curve. windows 8 was a bit bigger learning curve for me, but all in all it was not too bad....as for the start orb, after not having one for quite some time now, I prefer not to have it. I like the new start screen/metro area better.

however windows 9 might be a future purchase once available  Tongue

All Windows 8 users will get a free up-grade to 8.1.

http://www.ibtimes.co.in/articles/468152/20130516/microsoft-update-confirmed-unveil-free-windows-8.htm

I guess one might have to remove some of the tweaks from their windows 8 before installing or you might end up with 2 start buttons or something.

I personally found the new start screen slowed my creativity down a whole lot, having to launch it just to run a desktop program.

All the software I use for site creation and graphics seems to run on the desktop and the "Apps are made for children" I believe and not a serious power user of a desktop PC.

Well, given that a.) the "upgrade" will be available from the Windows 8 store, and b.) my "trust level" for M$ is at an all-time low, I think I'll pas on it until I hear some solid, real-world reviews, and then I'll decide. I like my system the way it is, now, and if I don't have to change it, I won't, unless given some compelling, positive reasons to do so. Wink

You have to launch the start orb menu as well no?  lol Tongue Just busting your chops Data  Wink
My main programs are pinned to the task bar or icons on my desktop, So I don't find it slows me down. I only use a small handful of apps like e-mail, Skype, and some news channels. though my wife does not like my desktop and calls it cluttered  innocent

She'd probably hate mine, then. With not one, but FOUR taskbars, plus one of the desktop panels filled with "fences" that keep my shortcuts in some sort of order, my desktop (when it's not covered with programs or other windows) is a very busy place. Smiley But again, it's far faster than trying to cram everything into the Metro start page. What a logistical nightmare! Shocked Even that wouldn't be so bad if there were a way to compartmentalize things into "folders" within the start page. Sort of a "one icon to hold them all" or some such. Cheesy

Mom found out about this, and was all chomping at the bit to get it. I told her to wait, as M$ rarely gets it right on the first go. I'm not going near it till 8.2 is in the pipes. Tongue
