Once again my flatmate's machine has helped me learn more 

After an overheat / switch off of his machine (fan dead, sorted now) he got a HDD not showing up in Windows Explorer. After checking disc management (right click 'My Computer' and then click 'Manage') it was showing as 'Dynamic Invalid'.
At first I thought all data was lost and the HDD was dead. After doing a 'drive fittness test' I realised the hardware was fine, something else was corrupted.
I wont bore you with the software that wouldn't do it and wanted me to pay for it, I'll just give the answer.

Nice, I bet your flatmate is happy about that.

You did well tracking down the problem and then finding a fix, it would have been easy to say ”the drives dead you need a new one”.

I make that two dead HDD’s fixed over the last year or so.

The drive was still in warrenty, was about to start jumping through the RMA hoops.

Thought I'd post it here in case others have had a similar problem. No data loss at all.
