No probs sybershot  Smiley

And thanks to you for up-loading the new GUI’s, they look nice  sign-great-job

I have added the preview images to the downloads, I had to cut down some of your text because there is a bug in the download manager that I haven’t managed to fix yet, where too much text breaks the image preview, I must have a look at that in 2012.

Good to see you on-line again, don’t be a stranger  Wink.

No worries, I'm actually trying to work out some bugs on a customers website, after he mingled with it for the past two years. 36 web pages and two years of old messed with code = nightmare. I wish you luck with yours, and pray it is not as tough of this one that I'm working on.

The download manager wasn’t made by me, so before I can mend it I have to work out how it works  scratch-head, not really something I’m looking forward to, probably why I haven’t done it yet.

I can understand how you feel Syber, having someone mess with your code and then sorting it out later doesn’t sound fun either.

It was not fun but, I fixed the website. My customer is happy again  Grin
now I face a situation close to yours as quoted below

I am building me another website, I'm not sure actually where I am going to go with it though atm, in regards if I will use it as a web store, news-informational, or just a forum with a home page etc. I am open for any suggestions from you or the community. the websites domain is americanmadeweb.com Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated.

I never self hosted my own forum before, I always used free forums creation sites. So this site of mine has a forum that will be staying. I used phpbb3 to create my forum but I really didn't want to design another forum, So I decided to use a template. What a nightmare this turned out to be lol. I also wanted to have the rest of my website incorporate the same look as the forum and the person who designed the forum template made a website template that looks the same  thumbsup
That is where my biggest problem comes from though Sad The website template is a joomba template, I never in my life used a server side control panel to assist with my websites, I hand coded them all thumbsup  Bad part is I don't know how to use this control panel it is a nightmare to figure it out, along with the joomba website template scratch-head
Sorry for rambling on I just had too get out some frustration, Hope ya don't mind

First, I don’t mind you rambling syber  Smiley, sometimes to see it there in front of you can help sort it out in your mind.

Well it sounds to me like you need (to start with) a site that can house downloads and a forum for support and general chat, then later as new ideas become clear you can expand it as required.

Which is pretty well what this site does.

I have never used Joomla but I know it’s a CMS (content management system) type website, personally I would rather make a standard site from scratch and then use a forum system that I can make a theme for that matches the site.

Have you considered using an SMF forum? They are extremely customisable with hundreds of mods available, this site is all powered by SMF 1, and over the last couple of years I have picked up loads of tips, I guess what I am saying is if you use SMF I could give you much more help, should it be needed.

I'm not sure if I want to host downloads with this domain, unless I turn it into a store or revenue generator. I have other sites already that serve that purpose. I know one more can't hurt, but I don't know. maybe I might, but I'm too sure just yet. right now I do know I at least want a forum, and a home page. That's is all I have in my head at this time. right now I have both but they are not integrated due to lack of knowledge about joomla. I wish I could have a better vision for this site, but this one clouds my head scratch-head I know I can expand later but a decent vision helps build the foundation stronger, and sometimes makes future changes easier.

Same here it is the first time I ever used a cms to build a site. So far it seems to have some pro's along with cons, but most of the cons are from inexperience I think. It is definitely a learning experience, and it is a totally different experience from coding, building, and updating a site on your pc then using a FTP to upload your site and/or make changes.

That is how my other sites are done, except I don't have the forums hosted by my host. I have so much going on I want to try and skip the main design phase to save time, reason going with the template approach. Is it saving me time? maybe, I don't really know just yet. However I do like the design, if I do end up designing my own it will probably be based off of the template.

To be honest I have not thought about it,  I went with phpBB for I am some what familiar with them and there control panel.
I will keep in mind about SMF and you knowledge about them, if I decide not to stay with phpBB. Thanks for the offer of help if I go with SMF. for if I do, I may just have to take you up on that offer for I never used SMF or there control panel.

I have used phpBB twice before, it works but to my mind it’s far behind SMF, it’s basically all the mods that make SMF so powerful.

Check out the SMF mod site:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/

The Hal forum uses SMF, its look and features are the absolute basic configuration, where as this site has over 30 mods.

Think about it Syber, if all you want is a basic forum the phpBB will do it but if you want to be able to add features and really make it unique then it has to be SMF.

AiDreams uses SMF too and I did my own mods for the things we needed, like the home page...

http://aidreams.co.uk/forum/index.php

And an article system I made too in PHP.

Tiny Portal is nice like Data says, the new version is pretty stable now.

Thanks for the link Datahopa. smf forums does have a lot of features, and Mods. I also Googles smf and found quite a few great smf sites, while taking a break from working on my site. I am at the moment satisfied with phpBB3 features,  Right now I'm not really interested in all the fancy mods, but one never knows what the future holds.

Freddy, I never knew you were owner of aidreams  thumbsup I spent quite some time there a while back reading through the posts gaining a lot of useful knowledge. I occasionally stil pop in every now and then to see what's going on there.

Small Site update: The forum part of my site is 90% finished and I worked out some bugs on the main page also. The site is coming along fairly well, I decided that I wanted a blog area so I created a page for that. I also applied filler text throughout the site, so I can see  how it is going to look. It also help with positioning thumbsup

The site looks nice and modern.

I signed up to the forum, had really bad trouble with the captcha, being colour blind it was a nightmare, if it wasn’t your site Syber I would have given up.

Then I tried to change my avatar, but can’t up-load my one because its over 6k, isn’t that a bit mean?, 6k, I tried more compression but I cant get it down to 6.

Will have a better look when I get more time.

EDIT:
I changed my avatar to a .gif and have managed to get its file size down, still would be nice to have at least 10 k to play with.

Thanks Data for the compliment. I am greatly appreciated for the input, and making me aware of issues  thumbsup
I agree about the captcha, and will be change the captcha. I do not have many choices available so, I might need to use a mod.

Sorry I was not trying to mean with the avatar size, the size is at the default settings atm. It is one of the settings I have not got around to setting yet. I will up the size limit tonight.

I also had a look at your site, and I like the look & feel. I had no problem with the CAPTCHA, myself, but couldn't help but notice that it's one of the types of CAPTCHA that have been easily cracked by bot scripts. I don't know how much latitude you have with your forum script, but if you don't mind, I have a suggestion for a pretty decent alternative. Have a look at http://www.captcha4us.com and see if this is something that you might be willing to try out. I know the guy who came up with this idea, and I'm pretty sure I can get him to "comp" you a premium version for free. Smiley
