Psidi's True Ghost Stories

Bob and Jane's ghost

Jane and her husband Bob moved into their first home a terraced house in the old part of Portslade Sussex. The house is about 100 years old and had never had a telephone. So one of the first things Bob decided to do was get a phone installed. Jane was there when the guy duly arrived to fit it.

After explaining where the phone was to go etc, she left him to carry on with the job while she went into the garden to hang some washing out. While out there in the garden she got chatting to her next door neighbour. (Well we women do enjoy a chat don’t we?) When she came back indoors she found that the engineer had almost finished He said to Jane "do you want me to fix that phone upstairs?" "What phone upstairs?" said Jane "we don’t have one up there!" Well he replied I heard what I thought to be a phone ringing up stairs.

That was the start of the haunting. Jane would often hear a bell ringing upstairs, and each time she went up to investigate it would stop!

She was never frightened just curious. She thought the house had a lovely warm, cosy atmosphere.

It wasn't until a month or so later when she was once more chatting to her neighbour that Jane mentioned the ringing coming from one of the rooms upstairs. "Oh I can explain that to you" her neighbour replied. "The last people to live in your house were a mother and her daughter. The mother was very old and bedridden so whenever she wanted her daughter to do something for her she would ring a small bell by the side of her bed to summons the poor girl to her side! That poor girl was up and down those stairs all day long! I would not be at all surprised if the old lady is still expecting her daughter to wait on her!"

Jane could hardly wait for Bob to get home so she could relay the story on to him as he too had heard the ringing from time to time. Could the bell ringing she wondered be a replay of the old lady doing the same thing in death that she had done for so many years in life, ringing that small bell? Still trying to get her daughter to come upstairs to tend her needs?

Then Bob had a very different experience a bit later on.

He woke one night and feeling rather thirsty decided to get up and go down stairs for a drink of water. (He had to go downstairs as there was at that time no bathroom or toilet upstairs.) As he started to descend the stairs he suddenly saw before him a misty shape and it seemed to be taking on the form of a lady! He rubbed his eyes to make sure he was not just bleary eyed from sleep and looked again. Sure enough there was this form in front of him. He described it as translucent and a bit misty. He said though that he felt sure it was a lady.

Now Bob is very interested in all things relating to the paranormal and was not at all frightened by it, in fact he was so impressed at what he was looking at that he put his hand out in front of him to try and touch it! (Brave man)! As he did so it just melted away he said. He stood there for a few moments trying to come to terms with what he had seen, then continued on to the kitchen had his drink and returned to bed and sleep.

I asked them if there were there any other spooky experiences they could tell me? They both said no that was all. He said though that soon after that experience they did have the house modernised and an upstairs bathroom and toilet fitted which meant knocking down some walls etc. Since then the haunting has stopped. No more bell ringing and no misty shapes.

This happens some times. Once you alter some of the structure of a place the haunting stops! Mind you sometimes it can have the opposite effect you can actually start up a haunting this way!

I asked if I could visit the house out of curiosity, and found it a lovely warm pleasant home. Yes it does have an atmosphere, a lovely cosy and peaceful one.
