Spinning Visitor Globe

I have added a spinning globe to the site, it should show the location of users on line, I have noticed that it doesn’t seem to display everyone that is online, not sure why yet. I have a feeling it doesn’t show bots that might be something to do with it, we do get a lot of bots and spiders hitting this site.

Lets see how it goes, I might need to make some tweaks.

Any comments?

Re: Spinning Visitor Globe

I like it.  I've seen this on quite a few sites now and am always impressed.  I like that it doesn't take up too much room.

It did impress me when I first spotted it too. Revolver Maps 2.0 is its real name and it is available in 3 main styles and quite a few sizes, you can make it go smaller than the one on this site if you like, there is also a 2D version available.

How very neat.
I don't think I put my address in the profile but "globe" knows where I live.   Grin

Re: Spinning Visitor Globe

Thanks Dusky.  Wink

You made me think a little.  Roll Eyes

In case any one is worried about security, the site that runs these looks pretty safe to me, it gets your location from your IP address, which we all have to give out to every site we view. It also only knows roughly where you are in the world, it doesn’t know your address for instance.

I have considered it might be a security issue for some people; I would rather take it down then put people of visiting the site.

But at the same time I think its pretty good to know where your fellow members are in the world.

Still thinking Roll Eyes

Re: Spinning Visitor Globe

If someone is that paranoid about IP address location being displayed then they should be going through a proxy server. Some people may not know how much info is available for IP address' and domain names. If in doubt, check 'whois' command.  Cheesy

I really like the globe. You can also click on it for a larger ver. in it's own window. In that window you can zoom in/out and rotate round in a Google maps type way but in much lower res. and more limited fashion.

Cool addition  Cool

Re: Spinning Visitor Globe

I think you did Dusky, glad you like it, informative and a bit of fun isn’t it, yes it should pick up people even when they aren’t a member. The who is Online box on the site doesn’t seem to give the same readings; something needs a tweak at some time.

Thank You Grin

Re: Spinning Visitor Globe

Thanks for pointing this out, I like it also.  I'm guessing the yellow dots are the Ip addresses and the yellow dots with circles are currently online.

Re: Spinning Visitor Globe

I think the spammers are from all over, coming from Europe too, well I know they are from their IP’s  Wink

Yes Carl, the yellow dots are people or IP’s that have been to the site and the yellow dots with circles are currently online. I have noticed if a I spend a while on the same page that the circles stop, making it look like I have gone off line even when I haven’t, for me its not perfect but still good.

You got a lot of hits from the US.  Was thinking the one on Oz might be Neil/Nige from Zabaware...

Re: Spinning Visitor Globe

I think I found myself on the globe,  Northern US, 30 miles west of Boston Massachussetts.  Now there are 2 others from the US.
