Mercedes Rear Wing

So chaps, what do we think?

Is the Mercedes rear wing going to be banned, or is Charlie Whiting going to resist the pressure and allow them to keep it thus starting an new development race akin to that started by Brawn and the "Double Diffuser" a couple of seasons ago?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/17593531

I'm slightly torn on this one, to me it seems a clever use of the DRS system to gain extra advantage, and it seems that there is some whining going on because others didn't think of it first....IE Red Bull who have been amonst the loudest protestors.....and that they will have to fundamentally redesign their rear wings if they have to try to encompass the system into their packages.

Re: Mercedes Rear Wing

I think they will be able to continue using it, after all it is only an extension of the DRS

Re: Mercedes Rear Wing

Usual F1 playground bickering.

If it was illeagal, it would be banned by now.

The current 3 week break will have all the teams trying to copy it.

Agree with Snowy, it must be legal or it wouldn’t be on the Mercedes, would never have passed inspection.

I wouldn’t be surprised if McLaren are one of the first teams to develop this, they have close connections with Mercedes and are possibly the best team when it comes to making up-dates quick.

But what will it actually bring to the car?

Faster qualifying times, check.

More efficient DRS in the race, check.

Better overall race pace, no.

Re: Mercedes Rear Wing

It wouldn't be the first time the FIA have taken a long time to make a decision on something like this, but I agree that it looks like it will remain this season.

I fully expect it to go the way of the F-Duct next season though.

I suspect if the race pace gain was more it quite likely would have been done away with already.

I do tend to, synically, agree with you. With the exception of 'unless Ferrari had it'. Shocked

The only reason the protests have been ignored is because Frerrari haven't complained.

Not that I'm saying the FIA have a bias towards the oldest team in the paddock, on no I would never say something like that, never..........

So we have a decision:

Who if anyone do you think will try to develop this now?

Re: Mercedes Rear Wing

I’m glad it’s been sorted out, it’s legal, like we thought, not good when politics gets in the way of racing.

Still think McLaren will be one of the first teams to copy it, seems other teams are playing down its benefits but for me if it helps in qualifying it’s something that a front running team will have to develop.

Lets see...
