Beyond Angkor: How lasers revealed a lost city
Something a bit different. A medieval lost city in Cambodia.
Quote
Deep in the Cambodian jungle lie the remains of a vast medieval city, which was hidden for centuries. New archaeological techniques are now revealing its secrets - including an elaborate network of temples and boulevards, and sophisticated engineering.
I love the way those tree roots grow over things.

I saw that article, the sheer size of the Khmer cities at that time was unbelievable

Got a link to said article? (never mind, I'll find it and post a link, if I can).
Angkor Wat has always fascinated me. Often called "The Forbidden City", and populated these days by several species of primates, it has the feel of a deeply mystic, spiritual place, and I'd love to visit it some day.
Ooh! here's the link:

Wow! That's awesome! Looks like I'll be doing my best to dig up details of this new information! Thanks so much for this, Freddy! I'll try to pass along any other interesting stuff about this that I find.

Sorry I forgot to include the link !
Glad it's of interest though. I'd like to go and see something like this one day. Is Cambodia considered safe to visit these days ?

There is a 2 part series about Angkor Wat on the Beeb. Called "Jungle Atlantis" or "Angkor Wat's Hidden Megacity"
I caught the first part. 2nd next week. I'm sure it's available from a torrent provider near you.

It's safer than visiting Baghdad, but not as safe as visiting NYC. At least that's my best guess.

Apart from the copious amount of landmines left behind yes

Re: Beyond Angkor: How lasers revealed a lost city
They're probably made of plastic parts these days so a metal detector is useless.

Re: Beyond Angkor: How lasers revealed a lost city
The Cambodian civil war went on around the same time as the Vietnam war, so plastic mines weren't available (or even possible) back then.

Re: Beyond Angkor: How lasers revealed a lost city
The ever efficient Germans got round this in WW2 by using wooden mines.........

Good point about the wood thing, but I don't know if the Cambodians used them.
